Artist Reflection: 2020 been overshadowed by politics and Covid. The Australian wildfires were just another tragedy from this year. I feel very strongly about wildlife and marvel at how more alike we are to animals than different! We all can reflect unconditional love.

Artist Reflection: I was inspired by the earth tone colors in the acrylic painting, by the green leaves in the background, and by the subject - hugging koalas. I chose the theme - connection - as the basis for my collage. During this difficult time, we connect (and get comfort) in different ways. Some of us hold others close, some hold memories of our loved ones, and some reach out across distances to connect. Some of us connect with ourselves, finding pleasure in things we enjoy and gratitude for how far we’ve come.

Artist Reflection: What spoke to me in the previous collage was the image of the mother holding her children. Calm, stillness, safety, peace. As a mother, our natural instinct is to protect our own, even from global pandemics. Our typical summer of over-commitments and activities slowed down to a snails-pace. Days were spent sitting at the pond near our house, nature walks, outdoor art and backyard inflatable pools. The disappointment of our “normal” summer turned into one of creativity and connecting with the environment around us. We all felt safe in our micro-world, and my kiddos said it was the best summer they have ever had.

Artist Reflection: Viewing the photograph titled Summer with the two children looking out across the water stimulated a sense of connection, curiosity and wonder within me. When I am in nature and feeling an embodied sense of true Self energy, I experience a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all beings on this planet Earth. Although I do not know those children or what body of water they were gazing at - I do know we are all in this together.

Artist Reflection: This engaging drawing, “Awake Awareness” immediately pulled me in. I felt the power of the ocean, the warmth of the sun and the energy of the earth in the center. The continents could almost be dancers holding hands. It reminded me that we can hold each other, even virtually, and survive the storm.

Note: This chain was started with a submitted community response to the prompt: How have you cared for others or how others have cared for you during these challenging times? The artists did NOT see the reflections written by the previous artist, only the image of the work and the title. The reflections were revealed only when the chain was complete. The six links in the chain are intended to offer a creative way to connect and offset the six feet of physical distance we need to keep from each other in order to care for each other.
