Sun, Surf, and Sand, 2017
Satter House, Revere
This six canvas collaborative artwork was created with the help of over 100 members of the Satter House community under the direction of artist Tova Speter. It represents our diverse Satter community, residents and staff together. We selected the beach as a unifying theme because, like the Satter House, we all feel connected to it, it belongs to all of us and it is constantly evolving. With leadership from interfaith chaplain, Rabbi Sandi Intraub, and with support from executive director, Steve Post, we set a goal of creating a permanent piece of art while strengthening our community. We hope everyone feels personally connected to the artwork and our community!
The artwork is made up of three parts – sun, surf and sand. The sun layer is embedded with all of the things for which we are grateful and is a constant reminder to show gratitude for everything we have in our community. Thankful words written by residents were blended in the paint, and the mosaic nature represents the beauty that can be found when many separate pieces come together to make a whole. The surf layer represents our contributions to Satter and what we bring to strengthen our collective community. This layer was created with many people working together on one large paper, contributing to the flow of paint and water. The sand layer incorporates actual sand collected from our beach, many individual dots painted by many residents to create the larger beach, and images of stones/shells with our answers to the question, “What Values Matter at Satter?”
The artwork began as individual pieces created by many residents at Satter, and transformed into a complete and more powerful visual kaleidoscope when assembled together. We need and appreciate each individual’s contributions AND we celebrate the beauty, richness, and meaning our community creates together.
