Paintings on Found Wood
2002 - 2017
In the beginning there was a dumpster. In the dumpster there were three pieces of wood. And in my head began a heroic quest to save perfectly usable scraps of wood from a horrid journey in a garbage truck that would eventually lead to their tragic demise. I may not have known what I was going to do with them, but I knew I had to do something. Months went by before I was inspired to expose the hidden beauty in my rescued treasure. Thus began my process of turning found wood into a play of color highlighting the natural energy of the grain.
Below are works from my first 15 years of painting in this style. To note: every line that I paint is a line that is already there within the grain. I choose which lines to paint, bringing forward or pushing back, and use color to explore the beauty found within the wood. I also always leave at least one or more “lines” without any paint, to honor the natural wood grain.
