Painted Cows

I am honored to have been one of the artists selected to paint a cow as part of CowParade New England presented by Herb Chambers. This large-scale public art installation included 75 cows to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Jimmy Fund, with all cows offered for sale to support cancer research. My cow, Heifervescence, was on display during the summer of 2023 at 200 Clarendon Street outside the John Hancock Tower in downtown Boston. I’m so happy to share that she raised $30,000 for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber! Thanks to Adage Capital Management, L.P. for sponsoring her and to the buyer who has given her a new pasture to call home.

I’ve been holding on to the pun for Heifervescence ever since I hear about the CowParade 18 years ago and was thrilled to finally be able to bring her to life. Painted in a blue palette inspired by natural patterns found in my wood paintings, the design also includes a resin-cast bubbly drink and white bubbles floating up to add to her “sparkling” personality.

In addition to Heifervescence, I also mentored a young artist, family friend, and cancer survivor, Yael Schulman to create a mini-moo cow as part of an educational arts initiative through CowParade New England. Her cow, Yatziry, means creative in Hebrew and was designed using a syringe painting technique that Yael learned while in the hospital getting treatment for osteosarcoma. Her design also includes nine spots representing her age when she was first diagnosed, with each one filled with a cow joke to make people smile. The mini-moo can be found at Mercedes-Benz of Boston, 259 McGrath Highway, Somerville throughout the summer. She is currently up for auction and available to be bid on here. Yael and I both spoke at an event celebrating all 75 cows before they were moo-ved to their new pastures. You can read our statements here.
