Make and Take
Open Studios - 2013

Open Studios 2013 was a little different than usual in my studio. Because I had focused much of the year on facilitating community art endeavors, I decided to offer visitors to Open Studios the opportunity to become artists as well. My studio was the home of an "Art Make & Take" in which people were invited to take any artwork from the wall, provided that they also create a piece of art to replace it and for someone else to select and take later on. Unsure exactly what would happen, I was amazed at the outcome.

Over 150 visitors participated, including kids and adults, and all involved became "exhibiting artists" at Open Studios as their work hung on the wall until it was selected to be taken home and enjoyed by another visitor. Throughout the day, participants checked back in on the status of their work, smiling broadly and sharing their pride when they noticed that their work had been chosen and had been taken by someone else. Everyone reported enjoyng and appreciating the opportunity to create art after/during their visit to Vernon Street where they were inspired by seeing so much art around them.

Special thank you to all of the participants who shared their creative spirit with the community though this project. I tried to capture as many works as I could and have posted them here for people to enjoy. Most people had no idea whose work they had chosen at the time. Feel free to look through the pics to find the artist who painted the piece you chose. Everyone is an artist, some just might not realize it until given the opportunity to create.
