Casa Esperanza Mural in Roxbury
Casa Esperanza was created as a grassroots response to the substance abuse crisis in the Latino community. With the mission of helping people to recover from alcoholism and drug addiction, gain the skills they need to be self sufficient, and repair and strengthen families torn apart by addiction, Casa Esperanza operates numerous treatment facilities providing services for individuals and families in recovery.
Under the direction of artists Tova Speter and Anyah Lee, Casa Esperanza clients designed and painted a community mural on Dudley Street in Roxbury. The mural highlights Roxbury’s diverse community and the importance of support for community members to be successful. It depicts themes of hope, Latino culture, recovery and community support. This project gave residents of Casa Esperanza and neighbors the chance to give back to their community and create a permanent reminder that community support is essential to keeping the hope in the recovery process.
This project has been funded in part by a Young Adult Community Grant from Combined Jewish Philanthropies, the Boston Public Health Commission Bureau of Addictions Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery, Casa Esperanza, The MEM Project, and The Art Connection.
